Road Safety Engineering

15 09 2015

We have built an enviable track record of expertise at all stages of road safety engineering in Urban and Rural locations. We have pioneered road safety techniques including the “Tracked Roundabout” technique, first introduced by the Stilwell Partnership in 1996 and now adopted on most major junctions throughout the UK.

Early projects included:

  • Safe Routes to School Pilot Project for Surrey County Council
  • Walton Area Road Safety Study for Elmbridge Borough Council
  • Lightwater Village Area Road Safety Study for Surrey Heath Borough Council
  • Road Safety Audits for Reading Borough Council
  • West Drayton Area Studies for the London Borough of Hillingdon
  • Road Safety Audit Heathrow Terminal 5 Proposed Access
  • W S Atkins. Road Safety Audit M4 Widening at West Drayton

Methodology

Preliminary Assessmentmeadows (1)
Initially we would undertake preliminary site observations, to identify and quantify the issues. We would specify and organise data capture for Traffic, Speed, and Accident assessments. Based on the analysis of the data and site observations, we would develop a number of feasible solutions to achieve the desired improvement in road safety.

If appropriate, we would consult with elected officials, statutory authorities, local organisations and the general public before arriving at the preferred solution.

Least Cost Solutions

We would consider low cost traffic management meadowsmeasures to improve road safety. These measures may include improved signing and white lining, traffic regulation orders, or minor works such as non-skid surfacing, build-outs, speed cushions etc. If necessary, we would develop a wider area traffic calming scheme applying the guidance of Manual for Streets 2.

Highway Improvements

Should the road safety issues require a more engineered approach, we would design Highway and Junction improvements with enhanced capacity, radii and sightlines.

Road Safety Audits

As a final check that other potential road safety hazards do not arise from highway improvements, we are able to independently carry out Road Safety Audits, Stages 1 through to 4, based upon Highways England procedure DMRB Vol 5, HD 19/15 and IHT Guidelines.
